“What Makes You Happy?”
It’s a simple yet complex question all rolled into one. Some of us might have multiple answers. Some of us only a few. Or you might draw a total blank, where absolutely nothing comes to your mind…
When Emery Reed walks into the diner Cooper works at and asks her that question she has no answer for him. Cooper who claims to love her dog, yoga and her books is stunned that she can’t voice her thoughts. And Why? Because is that really what makes her happy? She has been waiting her entire life to escape small Mobile, Alabama and the life she has had to endure. When Emery invites her on the trip with him to Washington. She decides to take the chance of being killed by this handsome stranger if it means finally leaving the hell hole she’s always wanted out of.
“I was leaving Alabama. I was going to Washington. With a strange boy. Whom I had just met. Who admitted out loud that he’s crazy”
As Emery and Cooper make their journey along with her dog, they make frequent stops exploring the country. Emery is reserved, writing his deepest thoughts only in his journal. He thinks he has Cooper figured out at first but he learns how curious and intriguing she is. Cooper hasn’t had the easiest life, she’s dealt with a loss some cannot fathom. But with her “sunshine” she goes on, only finding the good in things and loving with every part of soul. Both of them learning about life and experiences together. They will open their souls to parts of life they didn’t think they ever could.
“He kissed me like it was a privilege, like he didn’t want to rush, like we had forever.”
On the way to you is a road trip romance that involves mental health issues, mindfulness, and self discovery. It covers topics some find hard to read, and some can connect with. I personally connected with both characters. Without giving away the plot, or too much details, this book describes things so realistically you can’t help but stop and wonder. To think about your own perceptions and thoughts. This book will bring out the struggles of the characters, and pull at your heart-strings. I understood deeply the meaning behind the romance. It embraces the differences in all of us, and shows that nothing on the outside can show you what is within unless you dive deeper. This was my first book by Kandi Steiner, but I’m glad I picked it up. This book has left a mark on me and I’ll remember Emery and Cooper for a long time. Highly recommend.

What makes you happy?
That was the question Emery Reed asked me the day we met, and I couldn’t give him a single answer. I could have said my dog, or my books, or yoga — but I just stared.
And then, I got in his car.
It was crazy to take a road trip with a stranger, but after years of standing still, he was my one-way ticket to a new life, and I wasn’t going to miss it.
We shared the same space, the same car, the same hotel room — and still, we were strangers. One day we’d be laughing, the next, we wouldn’t speak. Emery was surrounded by impenetrable walls, but I wanted in.
Discovering his journal changed everything.
I read his thoughts, words not meant for anyone’s eyes, and the more I learned about him, the harder I fell. It turned out nothing made Emery Reed happy, and I wanted to change that.
I earned his trust by violating his privacy, and as wrong as it was, it worked — until one entry revealed a darkness I never knew existed, a timer I never knew was ticking.
Suddenly, what made me happy was saving Emery from himself. I just didn’t know if I could.
